The 'Moving Image' design field explores film and animation to create artistic works in space and time. It provides an environment for artistic experimentation and collaborative reflection on the moving image as a narrative medium. Dramaturgically conceived and spatially generated narrative structures utilise different forms of narrative or media for single- or multi-channel productions.
With critical eyes and courage, students explore the increasingly permeable boundaries between film, video, animation, physical space, and virtual space, and the potential of the fourth dimension. They can work in either context-related or location-independent contexts. However, all works are based on critical thinking about major contemporary social and cultural issues.
Key teaching offer in the field is the project, with a new topic every semester. An examination of references from art, film, and media history accompanies artistic practice. Engaging with established theoretical discourse expands one's skills in dealing with technology and content, and enables one to make predictions about changes in the dispositif.
In the Master’s programme, students are individually supported with a mentoring programme and a plenary session to prepare the Master’s thesis. The studio offers work facilities at the university, which can be used at any time. Excursions, lectures, and international cooperations enrich the teaching programme. The design field works hand in hand with the Audiovisual workshop led by Stefan Michels.
In the Moving Image Open Studio, individual topics and projects dealing with audiovisual issues are developed through conceptual, experimental, and practical approaches. This includes delving deeper into topics that have already been covered and undertaking extensive independent design projects, such as bachelor's and master's theses.
