Die Gischt der Tage
2025

Die Gischt der Tage (original title: L’Écume des jours) is a novel by French author Boris Vian (1920-1959) that tells the unusual story of love in a world where anthropomorphised animals, plants, and inanimate objects reflect human emotions. The surreal, playful scenario, in which mice dance and the sun shines from all sides at the same time, where eels live in water pipes and broken window panes grow back, is soon overshadowed. The sun retreats, and the world becomes narrower and narrower. Suddenly, the absurd novel turns tragic and subtly criticises an alienated society.

The central task of this group project is to translate the linear narrative structure of the original novel, broken down into scenes and individual miniatures, into a non-linear narration in space. The scenes function in themselves. Dialogues and cross-references between the scenes are created by the visitor's movements. The projection surfaces work with static image elements and colour surfaces, animated figures, and sets to challenge the surreal world through the animation.

Going back to the roots of animation, we will focus on traditional animation techniques between still and moving image (12 principles, smear frames, etc.). By studying video concepts for stage design we will develop a dramaturgy in space and train your practical installation skills by developing the exhibition.
